What is the RCM Loader?
The ROM loader is a device that looks like a USB key, with which "every" Nintendo Switch console can be jailbroken in just a few steps. After installing custom firmware (CFW) using RCMloader, the doors open for use by:
- Nintendo Switch backups games
- ROM hacks (for example, Super Mario Maker 2)
- Emulator (PS1, N64, SNES, GBA, etc.)
- Homebrews (Internet browser, video player, FTP client, etc.)
- Software settings (Console overclock, HOME menu themes)
Can a Nintendo Switch be cracked?
For the hack switch or complete the instructions below, a Nintendo Switch console with firmware 8.1.0 or earlier is required.
To see if your Nintendo Switch console is crack compatible, just check the serial number here.
Overview Nintendo Switch CFW | Advantages and disadvantages
As mentioned before, the crack options of the Nintendo Switch console have increased. There are currently a lot of CFWs in circulation, but these three have established themselves in the scene:
SX OS | Atmosphere | ReiNX | |
ADVANTAGES | + Compatible up to firmware 8.1.0 + Homebrews can be used + Backup copies can be installed in XCI and NSP formats + The backup / backup function NAND + Internet Local Play en LAN + emuNAND can be used + Cheat support |
+ Compatible up to firmware 8.1.0 + Homebrews can be used + Overclocking possible hardware - CPU, GPU, and RAM + The backup / backup function NAND + Bootlogo can be customized + emuNAND can be used + Cheat support + Free |
+ Compatible up to firmware 8.1.0 + Homebrews can be used + Backup copies can be installed in NSP format + Overclocking possible hardware - CPU, GPU, and RAM + The backup / backup function NAND + Bootlogo can be customized + Cheat support + Free |
Disadvantages | - Overclocking hardware impossible - The boot logo cannot be customized - Paid license 30.88$ |
- Backup copies can only be installed with extra effort | - No emuNAND support |
All of the Nintendo Switch Custom Firmware listed above have their advantages and disadvantages. As a result, one of the three CFWs you choose does not matter. However, if you visit any of the Nintendo Switch Forums, you will see a tendency to apply SX OS CFW. Also, we recommend this CFW but in the end, the choice is yours!
RCM loader instructions - Installing a CFW
Requirement:
- Nintendo Switch Console (Firmware 1.0.0 - 8.1.0 + compatible serial number)- RCM loader (contains a USB-C drive and a dongle + Jig)
- MicroSD card * (at least 2 GB size | Recommended: 128 GB or more)
- PC or Mac (to read and write the necessary microSD card)
Notice:
A Nintendo Switch game can take up to 16GB of space. Therefore, we recommend that you buy a sufficiently large microSD memory card right away. And you can buy a high-capacity SanDisk memory card with Switch games pre-installed here.
- Format your microSD card on the PC in exFAT or FAT32 format
- Download Atmosphere (0.9.2) or ReiNX (2.4) or SX OS (2.8 Beta) and copy the contents of the folder to the startup directory of your microSD card.
- Make sure your Nintendo Switch console is completely off
- Press and hold the ROM loader until the LED of your selected CFW illuminates (Blue = Atmosphere | Green = ReiNX | Red = SX OS)
- Plug the RCM loader, the RCM jig, and your microSD card into the console.
- Start the Nintendo Switch by holding down the following keys:
[Volume +] and [power button]
- Atmosphere - A vertical menu appears, which you control with the volume buttons and the power button. In the menu, select [Start]> [Atmosphere] and the console will restart automatically in the main menu of the Switch.
- ReiNX - The ReiNX CFW boot logo appears and the console automatically reboots into the Nintendo Switch main menu.
- SX OS - The SX menu appears. Select [Boot custom FW] and the console will automatically restart in the Nintendo Switch main menu. To activate SX OS, you need a paid license sxos, which you must enter under Album> License.
As soon as you select [Album] in the main menu, you will notice that the usual album application does not open, but with HomeBrew Loader (Atmosphere & ReiNX) or with the SX interface (SX OS). Of course, it is also possible with CFW enabled to retrieve the own collection of screenshots by starting the album application at the same time that the R key is held.
Are there any risks when using a CFW with the RCM loader?
If you want to install a CFW, know that Nintendo may be banned. If this happens, no official Nintendo online service can be used. Say that it is no longer possible to play online or use Nintendo eShop by conventional means. Even downloading game updates or DLC is no longer possible via official channels.
What can prevent you from being banned from Nintendo?
Basically, the safest way to use a CFW file is to not connect to the Internet. This ensures that no system information reaches Nintendo. It may be helpful to take the following safety precautions (no guarantee of safety).
- Disable in the system settings "Automatic Software Updates"
- Disable in system settings "share error information"
- If possible, always set the "airplane mode" to ON
- Perform software updates only if you purchased them legally
- If you want to play online, use only original games. The best thing to do is to start the console in the original firmware and read the titles online only from there and not on CFW.
Is the use of a CFW recommended? Is it worth it?
Developing a game over the decades of video game history has not been easier and it takes a lot of creativity and diligence to do something so complex.
Nevertheless, one can also use the CFW legally, omitting completely the use of backup copies. As mentioned at the beginning of the article, there are excellent applications such as: RetroArch (multi-console emulator), pPlay (video player), sys-clk (console overclocking) and many other tools that justify the use of a CFW.
For homebrew encoders, there is probably nothing better than developing new applications for the Switch, because the hardware has a lot of potential and there are almost no limits.
